Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Meets with his Canadian Counterparts
1 / 4

On May 26 the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Artak Zakaryan had meetings with Dean Allison, Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament, and Raynell Andreychuk, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Senate. The deputy of the RA NA Heritage Faction Tevan Poghosyan also attended the last meeting. During the meetings Artak Zakaryan highlighted the parliamentary diplomacy and, in particular, the direct contact between the Committees responsible for the foreign relations between the parliaments of the two states. The Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations presented the most important problems that the Republic of Armenia faces, touched upon Armenia's membership to the Eurasian Economic Union, as well as the developing relations with such international structures as the European Union, the NATO, and others. The parties reaffirmed the willingness of cooperating both in bilateral and multilateral format. The sides also referred to the settlement of the NKR conflict and attached a great importance to the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group. Artak Zakaryan thanked his counterparts for the firm position on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, underlining the adoption of the resolution and statements reaffirming the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Mr Zakaryan has also stated that the recognition of the Armenian Genocide should not be observed as a step against Turkey or for the benefit of Armenia, but as an important step directed to preventing the crime of genocide. In the course of the meetings a number of issues concerning regional security were discussed.
